In a massive exercise following months of preparation and logistical effort and grassroots management, 5851 children from Parivaar Seva Kutirs and surrounding villages where we got them fill up the forms etc in 26 districts (24 in MP and one each in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand) from hundreds of highly interior tribal areas, appeared for the prestigious Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNVs) for admission into Grade 6.
Hundreds of our Sevavratees were involved in transporting the children to as many as 159 examination centres spread across these districts.
86 vehicles, many of them especially hired for the day were used to transport the candidates from their villages and bring them back.
The JNVs are high-quality residential CBSE schools run by Govt of India where the cost per student comes to 1.35 Lacs annually. There are limited seats in JNVs (there is one JNV on each district).
Last year 59 of our children made it to the JNVs out of aroud 400 odd seats contestable for ST communities. This year we hope to make it a three digit mark.
For children from inaccessible tribal areas, where future remains almost a certain drop-out after Grade 8 (if not earlier) due to highs schools being very far, the residential schools are the only viable option – and in government system JNVs are the best. We also admitted 965 children in Eklavya and other Special Residential Schools last year, out of a total of 8000 seats in these districts. This year we hope to do 1200 plus.
